Mom tells cops icy bodies in freezer are her kids

Mom tells cops icy bodies in freezer are her kids

LUSBY, Maryland (AP) -- A mother told police that child-sized human remains uncovered in her basement freezer were those of her two adopted daughters and police believe she is responsible for their deaths.

Renee Bowman, 43, told police the bodies of two of her children were in the freezer since February.

Police were investigating an abuse complaint Saturday when they discovered the remains encased in ice.

The mother told investigators that they had been in her southern Maryland home for at least seven months, and police said they are considering the case a homicide.

"We have reason to believe that's the two children in the freezer," Lt. Bobby Jones of Calvert County

Sheriff's Office said Monday. "We believe that the mother, who adopted the two children, is responsible for it."

Autopsies would need to be completed before they know for sure the remains are of the girls, who would be ages 9 and 11.

Deputies made the gruesome discovery in the home in Lusby, about 50 miles southeast of Washington, D.C.

They were there with a search warrant to investigate the treatment of a girl who had run away and "showed signs of extreme abuse and neglect," the sheriff's department said.

The girl's mother, 43-year-old Renee Bowman, has been arrested, and a judge has ordered her held without bond.

She is charged with first-degree child abuse in the beating of the runaway 7-year-old, who was found wandering in the neighborhood wearing only a blood- and feces-soaked T-shirt. The girl escaped from a locked bedroom by jumping out a second-story window, and Bowman admitted beating her with a "hard-heeled shoe," officials said.

Bowman told detectives that she brought the remains in the freezer with her to Lusby when she moved from Rockville, about 60 miles away, in February. Montgomery County Police are investigating whether the deaths took place in Rockville. Bowman has not been charged in the older girls' deaths.

It is not clear how the children might have died. The medical examiner's office in Baltimore was to examine the freezer and its contents. It was unclear how long it would take for autopsies to be completed.

Authorities said Bowman adopted three children from the District of Columbia. Besides the 7-year-old, the other children would now be 9 and 11, and officials said their whereabouts are unknown. Montgomery County Police said detectives are trying to pin down when the older girls were last seen alive, as well as where the family was living and when.

According to charging documents drawn up before the remains were discovered, the 7-year-old went door-to-door looking for help after jumping from the window Friday night. A neighbor gave her clothes and called 911.

The girl had open sores and lesions on her buttocks and lower thighs, marks on her neck made by a cord, rope or other item and bruises on her hands and lips. She told investigators her mother caused the injuries and that she jumped out the window to "free herself from her mother's relentless beatings," according to the documents. She is being cared for by child protective services.

No one was home when authorities arrived at the modest single-story house in the secluded, heavily wooded subdivision with narrow gravel roads. Bowman showed up later at the sheriff's office and said she had locked her daughter in the girl's bedroom while she went to D.C.

Bowman told the deputy who interviewed her about the 7-year-old's abuse "that she knew what she did was wrong," according to the charging documents. "She advised she (Bowman) was out of control and needed help."

Sheriff Mike Evans said the surviving girl was never enrolled in Calvert County Schools. He said neighbors had seen her and that no trouble had ever been reported at the house. Bowman's only contact with the sheriff's department since she arrived was a traffic stop.

No attorney had entered an appearance on Bowman's behalf Monday afternoon. Dorothy Hodge, deputy district public defender for Calvert County, said an attorney from the office would interview Bowman to determine if she wanted to be represented.

Pa. man guilty of child porn; one victim was 3 months old

John Jackey Worman of suburban Philadelphia has been convicted on child-pornography charges for abusing or raping children as young as 3 months old. Police found more than 1 million visuals on his computer, including thousands of videos of Worman raping children at their baby-sitter's house.

Worman, 41, of Colwyn, faces a maximum sentence of 15 to 30 years in prison on each of the 50 counts.

Sentencing is scheduled for Dec. 18. He has been in custody since February 2006.

The baby sitter, Concetta Jackson of nearby Collingdale, a former girlfriend of Worman's, pleaded guilty this month to manufacturing child pornography. According to the Associated Press, Worman installed cameras in Jackson's bathroom and captured children undressing and showering. He also raped eight children and recorded the assaults.

The jury is to begin deliberating in the case of co-defendant Dorothy Prawdzik. Prosecutors say she is a one-time girlfriend of Worman's who posed children in front of the hidden cameras.

Damn it - Round them up and ship them OUT!

"They ordered 457,000 to leave or get prosecuted. 8 people left. The remaining are STILL not being prosecuted!!!!!

STEP RIGHT UP: 'Operation Scheduled Departure', a pilot program by the
Homeland Security Department's Immigration and Customs Enforcement
agency, was launched in five cities in hopes that some of the estimated
11 million illegal immigrants would deport themselves. An estimated
457,000 illegals were targeted: those who had been ordered to leave,
but had not done so. If they volunteered to self-deport under the new
program, they wouldn't be prosecuted for staying. During the three-week
pilot phase, only eight people volunteered to be deported. 'I don't
consider the program a failure,' said Jim Hayes, in charge of ICE's
deportation unit, since the $41,000 effort proved that such programs
are ineffective. (New York Times)"

Principal regrets making students view excrement - Yahoo! News

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - A Colorado Springs elementary school principal has apologized for making students look inside a bag of human feces and urine.

Peyton Elementary Principal Michael Auclaire said he wanted to make a point to the students because someone had been leaving human waste on the floor and toilet seats in a girl's lavatory.

Some parents complained Auclaire's actions were inappropriate and created a health risk.

Auclaire said he has apologized in person to the students and by letter to their parents. He said he realized it was "not the best thing to do."

Auclaire said the students were given janitorial gloves to wear before holding the bag and were told to wash their hands afterward.

The incident took place Monday and Auclaire apologized Tuesday.

Police: Man blames bad driving on spilled beer - Yahoo! News

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - A man with four previous drunken driving convictions who was stopped for weaving in and out of traffic on Interstate 40 was ready with an excuse for his poor driving: his passenger spilled his beer.

Not surprisingly, the man was arrested just before midnight Saturday, said state police officer Kurtis Ward, who said he initially thought the driver was joking.

"He was so matter of fact about it, like it wasn't a big deal," Ward said.

The 31-year-old man was allegedly too drunk to perform field sobriety tests and was arrested on aggravated drunken driving charges, court records said.

Ward found four opened bottles of beer in the car, court records showed.

It was the man's sixth DWI arrest. He had been found guilty of four of five previous drunken driving charges and has paid $1,750 in fines, the DWI Resource Center said.

What has this world come to????

PASADENA, Texas (AP) — Two teenage girls are accused of stabbing a 75-year-old man to death in a robbery that netted them just $15, and police say the mother of one of the teens helped put them up to it.

Dannette R. Gillespie, 38, gave knives to her 15-year-old daughter and Vanessa Anne Ocampo, 19, then waited in their car while the teens robbed and killed Eugene Palma, according to a probable cause warrant.

All three were charged with capital murder Friday and were being held without bail. Police did not immediately respond to a call Saturday asking if the suspects had attorneys to speak for them.

Palma, a bar owner, was found stabbed several times in the driveway of his home in this Houston suburb Wednesday. He did not know the women, Pasadena police said.

According to the warrant, Ocampo told police the three had been looking for someone to rob that morning.

"He would've given them money — that's the crazy thing," Kim Nawrot, a bartender at Palma's bar, told the Houston Chronicle. "He was the kind of guy that would've given anyone the shirt off of his back."
A palm print on Palma's car led police to the women, authorities said. Gillespie and her daughter, who was not identified because she is a juvenile, were arrested in Pasadena. Ocampo was arrested in San Antonio.

Police said Ocampo told investigators the three went to Palma's bar and followed him home, and that Gillespie handed knives to her daughter and Ocampo and "encouraged them to commit the robbery."
The two younger women went through Palma's pockets and car in search of money and Ocampo took $15, according to the warrant.
