Woman gets her diploma, 76 years later

Illness kept Leah Moore Harris Fullmer from attending her high school graduation. Then it took decades to find her transcript. But now it's official: At age 94, Fullmer is a member of the Provo High School Class of 1931.

Fullmer was helped into a white gown at a school board meeting Tuesday. She even gave her graduation cap a celebratory toss.

"The only thing we forgot was 'Pomp and Circumstance,'" said Greg Hudnall, director of student services.

Fullmer was confined to her home with red measles, known as rubeola, during Provo High's commencement in 1931. She didn't pick up her diploma, and the school never sent it.

A son, Blaine Fullmer, pressed the school district to find her records in time for her 95th birthday, Aug. 31.

"This is all a big experience for me," she said. "Here I am 95 and just getting my diploma. You'd think I was smarter than that."

Principal Sam Ray gave her the diploma.

"We are sorry it has taken so long," he said.
